        The School of Social and Public Administration is a secondary professional college engaged in the teaching and research of social sciences in university. Its predecessors were the Basic Department established at the beginning of the school in 1952, the Department of Social Sciences established in 1985, and the Institute of Culture established in 1988. In 1996, the school integrated the academic resources of liberal arts and established the School of Grammar and Law, which recruited undergraduates in administration and social work and enrolled master degrees in sociology. In 2005, it was renamed the School of Social and Public Management, mainly conducting scientific research and personnel training in sociology and public management.

        The college has five undergraduate majors: social work, labor and social security, administration, public service management, and sociology. It also provides a master's degree in sociology and public management, a master's degree in social work (MSW), and a master's degree in public administration (MPA)two professional master's degree programs, and a first-level doctoral degree program in sociology. There are 123 faculty members including post-doctorates, including23 professors, 31 associate professors and 38 lecturers. The college has a strong combination of older, middle-aged, and youthful teaching and scientific research capabilities.

        With the efforts of Professor Xu Yongxiang, Professor Cao Jinqing, and other college founders, the college established a core value of national situation, evidence, intervention.” Thanks to the unremitting efforts of the teachers, students and staff, the school's discipline development and talent training have made great progress. The Sociology Major program consistently receives a top tier nationwide ranking. It received an assessment of B+ in the fourth round of discipline evaluation and was incorporated into key disciplines in Shanghai in 2005. The social work major program was included in the first batch of national first-class undergraduate major construction points.

        The teachers of the school have undertaken four major projects in the National Social Science Fund, four key projects in the National Social Science Fund, and have also undertaken more than forty general projects and youth projects. They have achieved fruitful results in academic research. In the past five years, they have published nearly one thousand papers in various academic journals at home and abroad, and have also published influential books, translations, and teaching materials such as social work, social policy think tanks, and social work genre translation libraries.

        In recent years, the discipline construction of the school has made great progress, attracting a large number of young talents locally and from abroad to join. The college also actively uses professional knowledge to serve the society and has achieved fruitful results in research fields such as social work and social governance, and has targeted poverty alleviation. While making progress in scientific research, the school is also actively carrying out teaching reforms, creating an excellent education environment, emphasizing the training of research-oriented talents,” realizing the full-course tutorial system for undergraduates, and significantly improving the quality of talent training. More and more outstanding students have come to the fore. In recent years, they have won two second-place prizes in the National Challenge Cup Competition and more than twenty awards in various provincial and municipal competitions. The school is also actively exploring the construction of new liberal arts programs, adding cutting-edge courses on computational social science and artificial intelligence and social development.” Graduates have strong competitiveness in the job market and are active in various fields such as government agencies, social organizations, and enterprises. More than 30% of undergraduate graduates are recommended to be exempted or admitted as master's degree candidates, and some of them continue to study a doctoral degree and then teach in universities locally and abroad after graduation.
